I bought my first knife just now. Got a Morakniv Companion in bright orange off amazon for like $14 w/ free shipping. I needed a decent fixed blade to keep around the dorm/camp with.

Very nice! Reminds me very much of my Mora. They last forever. Does it have a full tang?

I think it's only a 3/4 tang

How are you in college and just now buying your first knife? I guess I really am southern.

I normally just use a steak knife or something to do what I want.

If the blade is under 3" you can take it anywhere. Blades under 3" are legally considered a tool and dont require a weapons permit to be carried in public.

I have a manually opened, straight edged and serrated blade tanto Gerber. No sense in carrying a fixed blade all the time 24/7. Plus the double edge gives me more utility. And being manually opened gives me more reliability.

I didn't know that was associated as a southern thing. I got my first knife when I was like, 10, as a Californian.

Welcome to the knife game! This is my Spyderco. I literally don't leave the house without it.

The spring opened knives are kinda bulky and straight edged knives aren't good for much more than stabbing or skinning.

And for everyday uses such as opening packages or cutting things like zipties, you dont really need anything more. I keep mine in my truck's armrest along with a swissarmy knife

I mostly only use mine while Im at home. But this is WV that Im at for school so every other dude has a knife anyway. And its habit for me at this point because I always have it on me when Im in uniform.

I rarely use mine anymore, But I feel naked without it. You never know when you'll need a reliable blade for everyday tasks

I love Gerbers! My brother and I both have Gerber Paraframes. This is his.

If you don't have one, get one. Fantastic knives. He carries it daily.

This one is 4" long but it's for not public use. I don't want to carry a fixed blade everywhere. My brother is buying me a Kershaw folding knife for my birthday that I will carry every day.

I honestly don't get the point of carrying a folding knife around all day. Iunderstand it if you need it for work or something, but most people don't.

I carry a Swiss on my keychain, and to me that's way more practical, versatile, and compact.

I know that feel bro. I get my Spyderco professionally sharpened at every gun show, but the guy who does the work has been absent recently so I'm doing my best with my diamond sharpener haha

I carry my gerber because I don't like the weight of my Victorinox on my keys and I want something with a clip so it doesnt move around in my pocket

I actually got the law wrong its 4" and under so legally, you could carry that if you wanted

I've just got a classic tinker, so the weight's never been an issue.

My dad has one of those PHAT ones with a magnifying glass and saw and crap. No way I'd ever put that on my keys.

Not really a knife per se, but I've carried one of the big, original Leathermans for 15 years in my bag for work. The company frowns on "knives" in the work place... but the Leatherman comes in handy at least a few times a week. The blade on it takes a surprisingly good edge.

Good choice. I have a crappy pocket blade, and all my good knives are in the kitchen.

One Shun Japanese Gyuto and one Global 3.5 inch paring knife.

The paring knife fits my hand perfectly so I can just glide around potatoes and other things that need peeling.

I guess I'm used to the stereotypes of southerners carrying knives and guns out of the womb.

Interesting. I've carried a pocket knife with me everyday (except where prohibited by law) since I was around 10 or 11. They're just so useful.

Guns yeah, that's probably accurate. I just don't equate guns and knives.

This is a fixed blade knife, it doesn't fold so it isn't the best for carrying around every day. So my plan is to keep this knife in my dorm room to use for normal knife things. This is also going to become my camping knife to pack when I go camping.
